The Necessary Evil

Donald John Trump, a name rippling across the world as a controversial, undiplomatic, sexist, chauvinistic man with a horrendous hairdo is also the new President of the United States of America. The businessman turned president as it turns out holds an unsparing attitude towards Muslims, Mexicans and though very unfortunate, women. Trump’s views however, aren’t something very out of ordinary, in fact every one of us has said or heard things stereotyping a certain community or gender, but again not every one of us runs for the president’s office of USA. There is a certain level of discretion that is needed to be maintained (even if you don’t care a dime) when you are running for the most powerful position in the world, but according to Trump, “discretion” is the reason America failed to curb terrorism and that America is losing, he is there to make America great again. The man somehow managed to win in spite of doing and saying all the wrong things during his presidential campaigns. With America divided and so the world, Donald J.Trump stands tall, unapologetic and uncensored. This make me question, is Donald Trump the need of today? Is he the necessary evil?

The world is changing and not for good. Terrorism is becoming the crux of any foreign policy. There is polarisation of views among the world leaders, some advocating terrorism, some justifying religious discrimination, while some declaring outright war against nations they think is terrorist infected killing thousands of innocents in return. There are things one needs to do, changes are to be made; now you can’t always keep on carrying a knife to a gunfight only because a gun is too violent and that you want to give the world a message even if that gets you severely hurt. What I mean is that probably it’s now time to fight back, reply to a gun with a gun. Probably, it’s time to question our approach towards curbing terrorism, to check facts and accept reality. Probably we are letting more innocents die by holding back and talking diplomacy. Probably Trump is right; we really need to “Bomb the shit out of ‘em”.

Donald Trump’s recent temporary ban on immigrants from seven terror centric Muslim majority nations created turmoil across the world. Since WWII USA has been the world’s leader in resettling refugees. The US refugee policy was based on the premise that it’s the obligation of the stable and wealthy governments in the world to help the weak and powerless against whom crimes are committed and that they are protected. Certainly the situation of the world was very different back then, and so was the number of refuge seekers. Trump certainly doesn’t share the same feeling of obligation but his actions of course cannot be blamed. France for instance seeks the second highest number of refugees in Europe after Germany. Since 2014, there have been over 20 terrorist attacks where more than 200 people were killed. Even in Germany there have been five instances of terrorist attacks since 14. Is there any correlation between the number of refugee acceptance and terror attacks? Maybe, maybe not, but in most of the cases the security of the innocents have been jeopardised while trying to do the “right thing”.

India is constantly bleeding from cross border terror attacks. Hardcore evidences of terror houses settled in Pakistan who carried out Mumbai attacks were handed over, peace talks to cultural exchanges to fiscal aids, everything turned out futile. Pakistan’s inaction in curbing or at least attempting to curb terrorism in their soil says a lot about the extreme global scenario. Prime minister of India Narendra Modi may play hardball against Pakistan but it probably is the requirement of today. I believe that even after 70 years of independence there are problems in Kashmir because we played the diplomatic game for too long. If India would have taken some firm action long back without patronizing Pakistan or any other separatist groups, Kashmir would have been peaceful by now.

You cannot save the world while letting your own country burn. Trump is not wrong when he says America first, neither is Modi. Their way of doing things may look unorthodox, impolite, undemocratic, and selfish but maybe it’s the right way to deal with the world today.
